Embroidered Memories Of Home
by Alexandra Den Hond
At TKS, staff and artisans alike love the creative process of coming up with new items, designs, needlework techniques and colour combinations. We are therefore always thrilled when someone approaches us with a special request that challenges us to come up with something fun, unique and beautiful outside the scope of our usual collections.
This spring, we were contacted by two young Syrian men living and working in Dubai, who asked us to cheer up their bachelor pad with hand-embroidered cushions that reminded them of home. We immediately started brain-storming with master artisan Malak, and came up with four pillow cover designs featuring some beautiful highlights of Syrian architecture: the Citadel of Aleppo (seen on the ochre cushion), the Great Mosque of Damascus (seen on the bright yellow cushion), and two scenes from classic Damascene townhouses (seen on the red and green cushions). We think they turned out absolutely stunning thanks to both our artisans and our clients, who showed us how to draw inspiration from your homeland even when you’re far away!
